It
is very important to know that emotional intelligence is not only restricted to
a personality domain, where it helps us to recognize our emotions so that it
can help thoughts to generate in our mind which in turn, helps us to understand
the meaning of emotions so as to create a good emotion as well as a good thought,
but it is also considered as another type of intelligence which is different
from IQ.
The
ability of dealing with emotions differ from person to person and this
difference is present in such a way that it is not only complex but is also
varied. Thus, one can consider different types of abilities which can be
compiled as:
1.
To detect someone's emotions by their gestures, the posture of their body, the
pitch of their voice and the way they talk.
2.
To understand the precursor and consequences of emotion.
3.
To smoothen our thoughts by evoking a particular emotion.
4.
To balance the thoughts such as anger and sadness, which are negative.
It
is often assumed that a person's intelligence remains constant with the change
in his or her environment. However, the results show that, instead, a person's
score is constant relative to his or her age group. So, a 17 year old teenager
can solve a problem more easily than an 8 year old kid.
Research
says that there is a change in IQ following early adulthood. After a number of researches
done on the age groups ranging between 21 to 60 years, it is found that due to
the age difference, there is a decline in the function of intelligence. As
there is a cross-sectional contrast rather than a longitudinal contrast in
these studies, there are many problems related to such studies. The studies in
which longitudinal data are available, the decline in the intelligence with age
is less obvious. This result is also supported by the researches done in 1990s
which were based on the cross-sectional and longitudinal samples. The result
also said that the decline in intelligence is considerable in the age group of
65 to 80.
Few
people are more emotionally smart than others. A person with more emotional
intelligence has better social relations. Someone who can perceive emotions
better than others and use them in their thoughts by understanding its meaning is
considered high EI individuals. These people can solve emotional problems more
easily and are more approachable than others. They are more involved in social
activities like teaching and counselling than in occupations like clerical or
any other administrative work. These people are smart enough to keep themselves
away from any negative behaviour and avoid them as much as they can.
If
someone scored high on emotional management of EI test, he or she is more
likely to possess a sentimental attachment with his or her family members and
have more positive social interactions. These people can be more motivating and
can help others achieve their goals.
After
taking the Big Five Personality Test one can easily see how the personality
traits associate with the overall EI. It measures the personality of a person
depending on five factors: Extraversion, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism,
Agreeableness and Openness.
Extraversion
defines ones orientation towards things which is outside of oneself and also
shows how satisfied a person is after interacting with others.
Conscientiousness shows how careful and orderly a person is. Neuroticism
reflects the tendency to experience negativities. Agreeableness shows how much
someone like and try to please others. Openness shows how much a person tries
to seek out new experiences.
If
answered correctly, one can truly associate the personality traits which are
measured with the overall EI.
